In a recent column in The Sacramento Bee, I write about creating a culture of excellence in our schools by introducing the idea of merit pay and bonuses for great teachers.

Every parent learns, sometimes to their chagrin, that children pick up all kinds of lessons based on their environment, regardless of whether or not the lessons were intended. When our kids spend years exposed to a school system where the bare minimum gets the same reward at the best effort, what lesson can we expect them to carry away?

In the working world, and in our personal lives, excellent effort draws rewards. Our students and our teachers deserve a public school system that provides bonuses and merit pay based on fair and transparent assessments of excellent classroom performance.
